BITO is a liquid, regulated Bitcoin derivatives and options vehicle, but its 0.95% fee and persistent contango make it inferior to spot ETFs for long-term ownership.
Overview
ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSE Arca: BITO) is a specialized open-ended 1940 Act fund launched on October 19, 2021 to provide regulated Bitcoin exposure through cash-settled front-month CME futures rather than physical Bitcoin. It gathered more than $1.0 billion of AUM in its first two trading days and now holds approximately $1.66 billion–$1.79 billion, down from $2.35 billion in late 2025 reporting periods. The sponsor earns a 0.95% fee, equivalent to approximately $15.77 million of annual gross revenue on a $1.66 billion asset base. **BITO’s core advantage is institutional liquidity and options utility**, including approximately 1-basis-point bid-ask spreads, established clearing and a deep derivatives ecosystem. **Its core disadvantage is structural performance drag**: contango rolls can cost 10%–20% annually in strong bull markets, while spot ETFs charge only 0.15%–0.25%. NAV is currently $10.92 per share, and valuation is effectively anchored at approximately 1.0x NAV through AP arbitrage. The five-year model produces a probability-weighted target of $17.44, or a stated +59.71% total return and +9.81% annualized return, but the fund is better suited to tactical trading, hedging and income strategies than long-term Bitcoin accumulation.
