A debt-smart Italian fiber owner turning connectivity into sticky cloud-and-cyber recurring revenue—yet still priced like a commodity ISP.
Overview
Planetel S.p.A. is a specialized Italian telecommunications and digital infrastructure group focused on closing the digital divide via ultra-broadband fiber connectivity plus value-added IT services (cloud and cybersecurity). Founded in 1985 by current Chairman/CEO Bruno Mario Pianetti, it has evolved from system integration into a vertically integrated operator that designs, builds, owns, and runs FTTH/FTTP networks and adjacent digital services, listed on Euronext Growth Milan. By FY2024 it served 54,200 customers (+6% YoY) and operated 3,310 km of fiber, of which 2,214 km is owned and 1,096 km is under long-term IRU—supporting margin control and service reliability. Revenue is heavily service-led and recurring: 87.3% of sales come from services versus 12.7% from products, with management citing ~89% recurring core earnings and low churn (~5%). Planetel monetizes (1) retail/enterprise broadband subscriptions supported by a backbone up to 1.4 Tb/s, (2) wholesale leasing of fiber capacity including 5G backhaul, and (3) rapidly growing managed IT services delivered through seven datacenters. Its hyper-local operating model (127 Planetel Points across 106 municipalities; 1,248 street cabinets) enables faster deployment and more tailored service than large incumbents, helping it sustain loyalty and defend margins while expanding geographically via acquisitions.
