Viavi is re-rating from cyclical telecom test gear to an AI data-center validation enabler—if it can integrate Spirent, defend against Keysight, and de-lever fast enough.
Overview
Viavi Solutions is a specialized industrial-technology company with two differentiated businesses: Network and Service Enablement (NSE), which provides test/monitor/assure tools for advanced networks, and Optical Security and Performance Products (OSP), which supplies proprietary optical pigments and coatings used in banknote security and sensing applications. Since its 2015 separation from JDS Uniphase, Viavi has evolved from legacy fiber components into a focused leader in test and assurance, monetizing hardware instruments, software licenses, maintenance, and proprietary pigments across CSPs, hyperscalers, NEMs, and central banks. NSE is the primary growth engine, increasingly tied to AI data-center buildouts and high-speed Ethernet migration (400G/800G/1.6T), and was significantly strengthened by the 2025 acquisition of Spirent’s High-Speed Ethernet and Network Security testing assets (adding meaningful high-margin revenue). OSP remains a defensible, high-margin “cash cow” secured by unique thin-film vacuum-coating know-how and long-term central bank relationships. With broad geographic diversification and a market narrative shifting toward AI infrastructure enablement, Viavi is transitioning from a cyclical telecom supplier into a structural beneficiary of AI network scaling—while taking on integration and leverage risk to do so.
