Woodside is a low-cost, dividend-paying LNG-and-oil major investing through a 2026 macro “danger zone” to unlock a Scarborough/Trion-driven cash-flow step-change later in the decade.
Overview
Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS.AX) is the southern hemisphere’s leading independent energy company, operating across exploration, development, production, and marketing of hydrocarbons, with a growing but still secondary “new energy” platform. After merging with BHP’s petroleum portfolio in 2022, Woodside shifted from an Australia-centric LNG specialist to a diversified global operator with assets across **Australia, the US Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and West Africa**.
The business is organized around three strategic pillars. **Gas** remains the economic foundation, led by the **North West Shelf and Pluto LNG** integrated projects, which are critical infrastructure for Asia-Pacific energy supply and supported by long-term LNG sales agreements into Japan, South Korea, and China. A major strategic pivot is the move into US LNG via **Louisiana LNG (formerly Driftwood)**, enabling Henry Hub feedgas exposure and global price arbitrage.
The **Oil** pillar has been revitalized, particularly through the successful **Sangomar development in Senegal** (first oil June 2024; rapid ramp to ~100 kbpd gross), supplemented by deepwater Gulf of Mexico assets and the future **Trion** ultra-deepwater project offshore Mexico.
**New Energy** is a longer-dated option set, highlighted by the near-complete **Beaumont New Ammonia** project in Texas and hydrogen/ammonia positioning for the transition.
Financially, Woodside is in a high-CAPEX phase to deliver **Scarborough** and **Trion**, targeting material production growth into the next decade. In H1 2025 it reported **NPAT $1.316bn** and **operating cash flow $3.339bn**, illustrating strong underlying cash generation despite heavy investment. The investment case hinges on safe/on-time megaproject execution and preservation of Woodside’s low-cost model through a potentially deflationary 2026 commodity environment.
